The Most Common Locks Used in Homes

Homeowners concerned about the safety of their loved ones and the security of their belongings may want to reconsider the types of locks currently installed in their homes. First, let's discuss the most common home locks:

Knob locks

Knob locks are the most common type used for exterior home doors. The lock cylinder is not in the door but inside the knob, and the knob only turns with a key inserted into it. Unfortunately, this type of lock isn't very secure and can easily be broken by brute force with a hammer or another essential tool.

Deadbolt

Deadbolt locks offer much more protection from break-ins. This type of lock employs lock bolts that move with the turning of a knob and don't rely on a simple spring mechanism. As a result, this style is more resistant to physical attacks.

Three common types of deadbolt locks are single, double, and vertical.

Single-cylinder deadbolts are the most basic. These have a thumb-turn on the inner side and a keyhole on the outer side. Note that the interior thumb-turn is accessible through a broken window or glass pane, so keep the door design and nearby windows in mind.

Double-cylinder deadbolts require a key on either side for locking and unlocking for increased security.

Vertical deadbolts operate similarly to the single and double varieties, with one significant difference. With vertical deadbolts, the locking mechanism moves up and down and not horizontally. This makes them much more secure than single- or double-cylinder deadbolts and more resistant to forced entry.

Mortise locks

This style of lock is sturdy and more of a lockset than an actual lock. The locking mechanism is housed deeper inside the doors. These can be modified to fit different types of doors and latches. They're secured with a set screw and a cam, creating the locking system.

Keypad or smart lock

Keypad locks operate using either a numeric code on the keypad or a key fob. In addition, some smart locks are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth compatible and can be controlled remotely with a smartphone.

Other considerations

Along with the locking style, homeowners should also consider the type of door they have before choosing a specific lock. Proper lock installation requires that the door is suitable for the type. The door's thickness, weak points such as glass panes, and the direction it swings in when opening are factors to consider.

The door's backset is one of the main factors when choosing the proper lock. This is measured from the door's edge to the center of the lock's hole. But, again, a professional locksmith can help with assessing the options.

Consult a licensed professional locksmith

The safety and security of a home are on every homeowner's mind. Unfortunately, there are several different styles of locks, and not all will work with all door types. Contact the professionals to determine which style is best and the most secure.
