Under Lock and Key
Keeping your valuables safe is what locks are designed to do. Your jewelry. Your guns. Your medication. Your bike. Your car. Your home. The list is endless.
The history of locks is a long and fascinating one, dating back to ancient Assyria, and then later, over six thousand years ago in Egypt, where ancient people created the first pin tumbler lock.
One of the first locks used in ancient China and Rome was the warded lock, ‘wards’ being obstructions that prevent the lock from opening unless the correct key is inserted.
English craftsmen created the first metal locks between 870 and 900, but in the late 1700’s, precision engineering opened the door for a much higher quality of lock. Robert Barron created the first double acting lever lock—a lock still used today.
Modern technology has introduced time locks, fingerprint locks, key card locks and smart locks. With a smart lock, you can remotely lock and unlock your door, check to see if your door is locked from your smartphone, and even create 'virtual keys' for guests.
